Good wedding photographers are a flexible bunch.  One day they are doing something one way and the next, due to a different set of circumstances, they are approaching things differently.  All the while they must have a certain consistency about what they do.

My taste, or style, in wedding photography is photo journalistic. However my earlier training in wedding photography was directed posed fashion(y) work. Constantly I find my self drawing on some of the skills I learned in my early years in wedding photography.  Some might refer to those skills and approach to wedding photography as classic.

The first time I met Lori was at her house just hours before her wedding.  She was stunning, and I realized that she had a certain awareness and confidence about herself.  When a photographer has the opportunity to work with such a bride, it is an open invitation to latch on to and work with their personality all day.  It can be a blissful experience.  Louis her groom was no different with his self confidence,  and  I thoroughly enjoyed working with the both of them all day.

Bellow are a few of my favorite images from their day.

As I was working on Louis and Lori’s images,  I found myself constantly being pulled back into frame of mind that called for a look from the early 1970′s.  A time where the film we had available to us had a slightly grainy, more contrast(y), but less saturated look to it.  Kodacolor 400 was such a film.  It is a feeling that I tried to maintain as I worked through the photographs of their wedding coverage.

The opposite of this look would be today’s overly used, heavily cooked,  contrast(y), and heavily saturated, totally rad look that in my mind calls attention to the post production of the images, as compared to the content of the images.   In essence I wanted to maintain a classic feel to the work for some very beautiful people.

Their wedding mass was held at The Church of The Assumption, Roselle Park, NJ with their reception being held at The Atrium in West Orange, NJ.  A special thank you goes out to the wonderful staff and management at the Atrium for being very helpful and accommodating that evening!

While most people may not consider Lake George New York  a destination wedding location,  I certainly do!

I just recently returned from a weekend trip to The Inn at Erlowest in Lake George NY.  Two full days of photographic coverage with an amazing couple,  great family and some awesome vendors.

The threat of rain came just as we were wrapping up photos by the lake..

Finishing the night off with some fireworks!

We have touched the subject of engagement sessions a few times on this blog. As wedding photographers we often encourage our couples to work with us before their wedding and get together for a few hours of fun photography. We happen to live in a very random and rich in dramatically different lications area. When it comes to one of the basic question of “where to shoot?” – we are always happy to consult and advise. Urban, beach, woods, rural, day or night, big city or countryside – you can find it all in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Yes, you can surely just go to a nearby park and shoot a few traditional poses with a long lens and beatifully blurred background…but hasn’t this been done millions of times over decades? Whenever you get to work with an unusual couple like Jenn and Tim, a door of opportunities opens. It was them who came up with all the locations for their engagement session, including the supermarket (yes, we got chased out of one by security guards but it dodn’t stop us from finishing the shoot at another one just down the road!). All of the below, very different imho images were captured during a few hours I spent with Jennifer and Tim a few weeks ago:

Engagement sessions are probably a subject that is still unexplored. As wedding photographers we love being creative. Sometimes during a wedding shoot we feel like there is less time for creativity that we would like to have – for obvious reasons. During an engagement session however, the situation is different. Most of the time we have all the freedom, space and no time constraints to do “push it” however far we want to and… of course however far our subjects will allow Looking back at this season’s engagement sessions I found the following images that I thought were worth sharing:
