Weddings evoke emotions worth remembering for a lifetime. We love photography and we put our hearts into our work.

favourite detail images from 2008 weddings

I recently posted a slideshow on my blog, of my favorite images from 2008 weddings.  I limited it to 3 images from each wedding, to give a representative overview of my best work as a wedding photographer in new Jersey.  As a follow-up post, I showed some of my favorite wedding cakes from 2008

So to round all that off, I’d like to show some of the most interesting wedding details I saw in 2008.  Hopefully this might even give future brides a few ideas for their own weddings.  You can easily see from these images that the couples put a lot of thought and care into the details of their wedding receptions.  Enjoy!

Iphone, L’Amour, My love, My Weapon

As visual artists, we tend to carry our ‘professional eyes’ with us at all times. I travel a lot, and often find myself guilty of not always having my ‘real’ camera on me.. that’s when I truly appreciate the technology, and thank the ingenuity of the Iphone! Enjoy a few – captured between NYC through Beverly Hills, San Diego, Carefree AZ, Florida and Jersey .. The first image is (how fitting!) the Apple store in Manhattan!

This evening’s entertainment is… !

The “party mood” continues on our blog! Tonight – dancers! These girls were amazing. The choreography was mastered to perfection and the whole performance breathtaking. All the photos were taken during last Saturday’s wedding that I had a chance to photograph with Monika Broz in Philadelphia:

Gimme gimme real grain not noise

Where have the days gone where it was a real struggle to get a low light shot ? In film days photographers who used ISO3200 film would be called crazy by some… because the final prints would be so grainy. You either loved that grain or you didn’t. Even in “early” digital years (2001/2002 when every major wedding photographer was either switching to digital or was about to switch) using the equivalent of ISO3200 was only for the really brave ones. “Safe” sensitivity cut-off was around ISO800. So whenever you did get a really low light shot and you nailed the exposure and the sharpness was perfect… there was something sexy about that grainy look…

Nowadays the latest digital cameras became so darn good that you can comfortably work with the levels of light your eyes can barely see anymore. Yes, of course that is a good thing. It expands possibilities and gives us wonderful tools that can be used in ways never dreamt of before. On the other hand though… something is lost in those incredibly clean looking images shot in alomst complete darkness.

As much as I love technology… I think you get my point. The below images were shot on Kodak T-Max ISO3200 film during the wedding season of 2008. Just for fun, for myself and… for the clients of course:

Film… there’s something magical about that very word.

Last Dance

Inevitably, there will be a last dance at every wedding reception. I will be there for this last dance at every wedding I photograph. For me, it is a perfect ending for how I cover weddings, to tell a story of your wedding day from beginning to end. Now, how the last dance is done varies from wedding to wedding.

Sometimes it gives the couple one last chance for a quiet moment alone.

Last Dance 5

Last Dance 6

Other times, it is a chance for one group hug!

Last Dance 2

Or the couple can be surrounded by their closest family and friends.

Last Dance 7

Or in a popular New Jersey/New York fashion, Sinatra’s ‘New York, New York’ would be accompanied by some high leg kicks!

Last Dance 4

No matter how you end your wedding reception, it is a perfect chance for me as a wedding photographer to capture the last moment of the beginning of your life together.

New Jersey’s national anthem

As a New Jersey wedding photographer I’m  accustomed to a certain rhythm and flow of the party at a wedding reception.  (I’m sure the DJ’s have seen this as well.)  You know from experience which songs will pull people onto the dance floor every time.  You know which songs hit just *that* spot for most of the guests.

And maybe it’s because Bon Jovi is from New Jersey, or maybe the lyrics speak of a universal hope for love-no-matter-what, or maybe it’s just a damn good song … but Living On A Prayer is one of those songs that I can predict will have the guests on the dance floor, and going just a little bit crazy.   The way people react to it, and how frequently it is on the playlist at weddings here in New Jersey, is the reason why I’ve dubbed it the New Jersey National Anthem. ; )

The Jersey Shore and New York City Engagement Shoots

Two of my very favorite locations! I love this job - we get to know eachother better and start to develop the trust and insight that makes for beautiful images! Photographing Lindsay and Mike was so much fun, I truly wanted to keep scheduling more location shoots. We had one really glorious day at the Jersey shore, and another beautiful day in Manhattan. Even though these types of photo shoots are not candids, they always seem to capture the incredible little moments and real feelings between the couple.

Art and Commerce

By Steve Burns

This has nothing to do with wedding photography, and then again it has everything to do about it.

Art is the skill that is acquired by experience, study and observation. It is the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects or works. Art implies a personal, unanalyzable creative power. It is a power that needs to be nurtured deeply on a personal level. (Taken loosely from Merriam-Webster)

Commerce, amongst other definitions, is the exchange or buying and selling of goods or commodities. In short it is doing business. Some aspects of doing commerce enliven, while some requirements are numbing.

The value of doing personal creative work, “art”, can never be stressed enough for any creative soul. Personal artwork is the food of the creative soul. You find it discussed through out “The Artist’s Way”, by Julia Cameron.

It is a vital experience, or activity for the creative soul to partake in. With out it one’s creative soul would die. Ian Summers’ uses the motto of “Grow or Die!” for his Heartstorming workshops. Truer words have never been spoken.

Through out my personal photographic life, I’ve always carried a camera with me be it to record my experiences, document what I’ve seen, or create what is in my soul. There have been times in my life when I’ve allowed the needs of commerce to get in the way of pursuing personal work. Too much of that and I begin to feel as if a part of my soul has been taken away from me in very short order.

This past December I was heavily involved in commercial work. On December 21’st, I sat somewhat brain numbed at the computer doing just that. It was snowing out side, and as dusk approached the light, and snowfall was particularly beautiful. I heard my soul calling out to me… “Get up, get away from what you are doing right now, and FEED ME!”

After putting on some warm clothes, and gathering some camera gear, I walked out my front door into the storm, to be greeted by the sight of a young marine walking down the street in the storm. A quick few snaps and he was along side of me. I stopped him, asking him if he would allow me to do a few quick portraits of him in exchange for a few prints?

Down the street there is a GAP store that was acting like a big soft box bathing the sidewalk in its light. I asked him to go down there with me, which he did. The rest is now history.

Young Marine

My creative soul was fed.

There is also another thing in life that is important to me, that being giving back to the world. I know that this young marine is willing to give something very dear for me, and I’m willing to give something to him and his family. They will be getting a nice large print.

Thank you Sir! Steve Burns
