The nearby Barolo Restaurant and Garden, at 398 West Broadway, offers flavors of the beautiful wine region of Barolo in northern Italy.

Group of 10 Photographers

As we approach the Group of 10′s second anniversary I feel that it’s worth mentioning, briefly – promise :) ,  just how far we have come as a group. It really goes without saying that each of us has progressed along our own individual paths; some of us have contributed to or published books,  more than a few of us have answered a demand for public speaking and sharing our insights and experience with other photographers.

However I do have to say that, for me,  probably the most important or precious thing about membership of the Group of 10 is the trust that we share. That may be somewhat intangible I grant you, however it is very real and of inestimable value. This value was recently demonstrated when I called a fellow member of our group and asked if he would be able to assist me at a wedding, at short notice I might add.  Now the details of why I asked for assistance are almost irrelevant, what is relevant is that I knew, without any shadow of a doubt, that I could trust this photographer to;  compliment my shooting style,  treat my clients as I do,  deliver great images and if the situation required,  step-in and take over the shoot entirely.

On this occasion Steve Burns complimented my style, treated my clients as I do, and delivered a great set of images. Thank you Steve.

Thank you Group of 10.

The wedding was at the Glen Foerd Mansion in Philadelphia, Lauren & Mickey truly were a great couple to work with.

Wedding Photography, And A Little Help From Your Friends.

By Steve Burns

The phone rings and the words you hear are, “Help me, please.”

The Group of 10 was founded in part as a support group of friends, for friends.  All of the members are friends whom happen to be independent photographers, and all of whom are very active in the wedding photography industry.

We’ve been a support to each other so as to bounce creative ideas off of each other, act as a sounding board for each other,  and get honest feed back from each other.  We support each other in our marketing and creative endeavors.

Most importantly though, we are there for each other in times of need.

There have been times, and I’m sure there will be others, when we have loaned each other significant equipment in emergencies. We have taken on the role of “highly qualified responsible” second photographers for the other’s wedding coverage’s.  And most significantly we are willing, if available, to step in for one another as the principal photographer doing the other’s wedding coverage should an emergency arise.

As a bride, you invest heavily in your wedding day, and you should be aware that we are there to support not only each other,  but to support you as well.

So in times of need, who are you going to call?  ( Hint: Call your friends, they are your best back up. )

Bellow are some images I’ve created for others, and I thank you all for the oppertunity to work with you!

Giving the beauty of you!

A few years ago, I was introduced to boudoir photography by a client of mine. She had asked me, as her wedding photographer, if I ever had done a session like that or would do it for her. I was happy to oblige! That was the start of quite a few sessions I have done over the years. Seeing the photographs from these sessions and coupled with the fact that the women were thrilled to be doing it for their significant others, as well as the feedback the men gave us, we decided to pursue it further.

At the end of April, my wife and I (owners of Scott Photography) have introduced our new division of photography, The Beauty of You! Our photographs are very elegant and artistic that visually show your true beauty, strength and sexiness!

We are a husband and wife team that work with you on these boudoir sessions from initial inquiry all the way to the completion of the album. My wife will talk to you initially to tell you more about our services and the session, as well as set up a meeting to meet us both. At this initial meeting, we get to know each other, discuss the session and show you the products. This allows you to feel very comfortable with us at the session, enabling you to get the best possible photographs for your significant other. Yes, my wife is always at the session with us. We chose “The Beauty of You” because although you are giving these to your man, they are just as much for you to celebrate who you are, feel proud of being you and show yourself that you are truely beautiful.

You can choose an in-studio or location session ranging from 1 to 3 hours. We also offer packages that include a variety of products to give that special someone as a gift! Please take a look at our website, The Beauty of You, to learn more about us, see our portfolio and get more information. Feel free to contact us through the website to setup a consultation if you would like to give the Beauty of You!

Haute couture!

I recently had a blast shooting fashion in a beautiful Victorian home, untouched since the 50′s.
This shoot was an exciting entree into a new creative venture called FrouFrouFoxes BedtimeStories, which is an artistic collaboration between fine artist and stylist Beverley Pattenden and myself (Monika).

Make up by Laura Nadeau and Chika Chan, Hair by Torre Somma, Non traditional fabulous wedding gowns by Vanilla Pink, and other fashions by Delicious Boutique.

Wedding at The Venetian being featured on 201 Bride

When I recently photographed Jill and Frank’s wedding at The Venetian in Garfield, NJ, I knew that it was slated to be published on 201bride.net. The florist, The Little Flower Shoppe in Ridgewood, NJ, transformed the entryway of the Venetian into a tropical garden. It was beautiful! Because of the scheduling for the day, I knew I would need additional coverage. Happily, Scott Bush from our Group of 10 network was able to work with me.

I know I just posted a few weeks ago,  But I just finished what I jokingly call an engagement session marathon!  5 couples in 3 days. A variety of locations starting in Hoboken after sunset,  Central Park, Newark,  Belleville ( Branchbrook park for the cherry blossums)  and wrapping up in Sandy Hook at sunset.

“Own the Music!”

If you’ve heard me speak at a seminar or meeting you may have heard me use the expression “own the image”.  I use it when I stress to photographers that in order to excell at their craft they must learn and practice until they truly do “own the image”.

I first heard it used in the context of piping, better known over here as bag-piping. Several years ago on a dark and stormy night (sorry couldn’t resist that) as I was quietly sitting in the background half listening to my youngest son’s solo tutor preparing him for his first competition. Mark, the tutor explained that it was not simply enough to have  learned to play a piece of music exceedingly well but that the piper must “own the music”.  Meaning that he, or she, must be in absolute control of himself and his pipes, reeds, drones, bag and all the other elements that make up a set of bagpipes. Not only that but also he, or she, must be oblivious to anything else, the weather, the judges or a parent in the audience.

I dropped the book I had been reading, listened, wrote down what the tutor had said and thought long and hard about his words. I believe it is the same for photographers. I believe that in order to produce excellent images on a consistent basis the photographer must “Own the image”. He, or she, must know not only all the ins and outs of the equipment but must also be completely focused, pun intended, on the subject matter. The professional wedding photographer must also have an acute awareness of the space, events and others around himself/herself  and work quickly and quietly without becoming a distraction.  One arrives at this point only after many, and by many I mean thousands, hours of practice.

Last month I practiced some more myself :)

Ulster Scottish, the pipe band my son plays with, recorded some of their music. I was given permission to photograph the event. I have to say that I was absolutely flabbergasted and struck by their level of competency and by their dedication. These folks do “Own their Music”.

As I watched I whispered to the pipe-major, Dave Hall, “This isn’t their first rodeo, is it?” Dave quietly chuckled and shared with me just how long and hard they practice. I could see and hear how they “Own their music”, some of which you may enjoy in this short show.

Let the season begin!

Being a wedding photographer we are often driven by the seasons,  Just like the opening day of baseball we look forward to our first “wedding weekend”    Sure I had a few weddings in January-March but April is really the start.

Last Friday I started with a pretty awesome wedding at Terrace on the Park in Queens,  T.O.P has an awesome view of the location of the world fair.

The groom (who admitted he only uses an electric shaver) asked me some tips on using a regular razor.

Tons of great details at this wedding.

“Little White Rose”

Little white rose that I loved, that I loved,
Roisin ban, Roisin ban!
Fair my bud as the moring’s dawn.
I kissed my beautiful flower to bloom,
My heart grew glad for its rich perfume-
Little white rose that I loved.

Little white rose that I loved grew red,
Roisin rua, Roisin rua!
Passionate tears I wept for you.
Love is more sweet than the world’s fame-
I dream you back in my heart the same,
Little white rose that I loved!

Little white rose that I loved grew black,
Roisin duv, Roisin duv!
So I knew not the heart of you,
Lost in the world’s alluring fire,
I cry in the night for my heart’s desire,
Little white rose that I loved!

Dora Sigerson, (1866-1918).  A poet from, “The land of happy wars and sad love songs”, Ireland.

A short while ago I had the honor to photograph the wedding of Anne and Paul at the Fordham University Church on the Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx, N.Y.   And I will tell you that their wedding celebration was most definately not a sad love song!

The wedding mass was co-celebrated by Father Bill O’Malley, and Anne’s friend, Father Chuks Afiawari.  Their day was witnessed by the rounding up of the usual supects of close family and friends from around the golobe.  Their wedding reception was held at the New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park.  The New Leaf Cafe, a wonderful intimate venue, is one of Bette Midler’s New York Restoration projects, were private events are planned by Tiffany Hogan.

Anne and Paul:  “May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.”

These are just a few of the many images captured during their day…
